In the autumn of 1939 at the outbreak of the second world war, the women of Bedford College, University of London, considered themselves 'in exile' when they were evacuated to the University of Cambridge. They were not to be diverted from their studies however, and were equally determined in their pursuit of alternative, if temporary, college rooms.
