Australian
born Jacqui Ma,
has worked as a product designer in Sydney and London since 2001. She
currently lives in London and works as a fashion trend forecaster with world leading trend agency WGSN.
Her extensive experience as an accessory designer include a previous post as senior accessories designer with Puma
International and a solid background in luggage design with her previous position as primary designer at Tripp for Debenhams, she has been designing and developing accessories
since 2004. Prior to Tripp, experience in new materials and industrial
design was gained at Opius, a leading London-based product design consultancy.
Her stint as an in-house designer with UK technology company Eleksen Ltd,
innovators of conductive fabrics, extended her experience beyond the traditional
sphere of product design to the development of new product concepts. These
concepts enabled smart fabrics to replace or complement hard plastic in
a wide range of applications: from telecommunications and medical devices
through to toys and furniture.
Experience in the manufacturing industry has also remained a consummate
part of her approach to design. Starting out with a degree in manufacturing
management from UTS in Sydney, and more recently working side by side
with manufactuers in China to develop and construct new product luggage
and bag designs with Tripp and Puma
Her entrée into design came when she left the manufacturing
industry in order to study Industrial Design at the University of Canberra.
During this time, in 2000, Jacqui studied for a year at the Paris industrial
design school, Les Ateliers, where she worked on projects such as an interior
fit-out for Ubisoft and a design workshop with IDEO, as well as working
part-time with a local graphic design studio. After graduating (with honours),
she worked for a year at Konstrukt Design in Sydney before heading to
the UK.
More
recently in London, Jacqui has been tinkering with her own brand of
products, launching AM Design at the St Pancras design show in December
2003. Her lamps and zip bags all look at the inherent qualities of the
materials from which they are made with the objective of re-purposing
the material or exaggerating its role. Through an ironic play,
her designs question at which point an idea becomes an object. See more
